    Millie’s Mark*

Named after Millie Thompson, the Millies Mark award is a special endorsement given to childcare providers who go above and beyond the minimum requirements. It certifies that in a nursery, all practitioners are fully trained in Paediatric first aid.

Millie’s Trust was set up by Joanne and Dan Thompson in 2012 after their nine-month-old daughter Millie tragically died whilst choking on food at nursery.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guidelines state that only one person with a current Paediatric first aid certificate (12 hours) needs to be available when children are present. Worryingly, the same applies to outings.

Like so many others, we believe that this is simply just not enough. How can only one person with the relevant first aid training be accountable for all children in a setting?

This is where Millie’s Mark comes in.

The organization now campaigns to increase the legal first aid requirements in all childcare settings, to ensure that every aspect of Paediatric first aid training is kept alive and in the front of the minds of all staff. This ensures confidence, readiness and capability.

The award, in Millie’s honor, gives parents peace of mind when choosing the right childcare setting for their child.

As part of gaining Millie’s Mark, all settings must ensure that staff are trained in either:

The full Two Day / 12 Hour Paediatric First Aid Course or

The newer One Day / 6 Hour Emergency Paediatric Course.

Paediatric First Aid Training provided by North Cornwall First Aid training meets the requirements of:

    •           OFSTED

    •           EYFS Statutory Framework

    •           HSE

    •           UK Resuscitation Council

…and has been written with Millie’s Mark in mind.

Millie’s Mark does not have a preferred supplier for Paediatric first aid, so nurseries are free to choose a provider of their choice.
